Aldi staff in the new Burscough superstore got more than they bargained for on Friday afternoon when a surprise shopper called in.

Edwin J Booth, chairman of upmarket grocers Booths, spent ten minutes looking round the newcomer to the Ringtail Retail Park – and do some discount shopping.

QLocal's Roger Blaxall caught up with him later as he prepared to leave in his Bentley Continental GT after a staff and management meeting in the Bursough store.

Edwin said he was ‘impressed’ by the new Aldi; it wasn’t that long ago QLocal revealed that Booths had specifically requested that B&M bargains should not be allowed to open next door and according to Edwin the new Booths/Aldi ‘partnership’ is a 'win win' for both stores.

“I believe we complement each other,” said Edwin.

“We've certainly seen an upturn in trade since they opened and I am very pleased with how the retail park is looking now.

“It was a good move to open here and Booths is performing very well indeed,” her added.

Aldi and Booths are like chalk and cheese in many respects with one featuring highly discounted prices and the other offering an upmarket grocery shop for folk who prize more local products and produce.
