This selection are all connected, starting at the roof and working down to the ground, it appears that it was some kind of lifting device?

Love these pictures--the last few of that "lifting device" or whatever it is/was--anybody have more information about it? Fascinating.

They have something similar in amsterdam, but it has a hook on; it was used to bring furniture into the house because it wouldn't fit up the stairs; might not be right but it's a rough guess

It would have been used to lift stuff off and onto the barges. It could have been corn, or any heavy cargo.
It all depends what the building was used for when the canals were in use for freight transport.

brings back a few memories, we used to live in Burscough, Alexander close to be exact, & Doris is correct it was a hoist for unloading the barges, & if my memory serves me correctly the building was a flour mill,& a happy new year to everyone from us in oz.
