Defrosting a freezer

I've just used a pin hammer to partially defrost our freezer.

Grab a chair and your wifes hair dryer, job done inside half an hour, stick a towel in the bottom with a washing up bowl on it to soak up the water.
Put the hammer away, burst a pipe and you'll need to fork out for a new one.

I just turn ours off when I go on holiday , come back shut the doors and switch them on ...

Wouldn't that crack some of the parts?

You know, going from freezing to boiling? Or is it only the other way around? My neighbour recommended I did that, but thought it might be a bad idea due to the above!

I think I'm lucky in that it was so frosted up I've just whacked away ice without touching any pipes. It's still cold so must still be working.

I'd like to buy a frost free one but convincing Mrs Me spending £800 is probing tricky, especially after forking out on a new car.

We have a frost free fridge/freezer at home and it was money well spent.

However, I used to love defrosting the freezer box at work using a couple of pans of boiling water and then going at it with the biggest knife I could find. Very therapeutic and luckily the thing always seemed to survive my hatchet job.

I've found Frost Free Fridges just won't stay as cool, can't get them low enough.

Food goes off a lot quicker.

Freezer part OK.

Just defrosted our freezer at the weekend.. after about 4 yrs!!!
Just turned the power off, and left it! was completely de frosted over night! thought it would have taken longer
